Dance
About the Program
The Dance program is a signature component of the theatre major as well as a thriving stand-alone minor.
Dance, and especially choreography, enhances students’ kinesthetic awareness and the understanding of spatial relationships so important in design, directing, as well as performing. The study of different movement practices deepens the intellectual and emotional exploration of theme, character and relationship dynamics.
We strive to develop students’ ability to recognize some of the many influences, which help to shape and inform dance today. These students can become discerning audience members and perceptive artists who can synthesize these ideas into the creation of a dance performance. We feel it is important to encourage students across many disciplines, from Neuroscience to Economics to Women’s and Gender Studies to collaborate within a liberal arts context. Through these effective collaborations, students gain skills to critique, interpret, and analyze dance, culture, and society.
The Dance minor takes full advantage of the liberal arts curriculum by affording interdisciplinary production opportunities on campus as well as off-campus performances and community engagement.
