CHAP 600 - Health and Hospital Chaplaincy

3 credits
Explores the history, development, and practice of chaplaincy in hospital and health care facilities. Students are introduced to the chaplain’s multiple roles with patients, medical staff, community clergy, hospital committees, and community groups, and engage a range of topics that have shaped the field of chaplaincy, such as navigating competing professional and personal values, mind-body medicine, psychosomatic illness, community violence, health care disparities, disabilities studies, opioid addiction, and long term care. A variety of religious and theological traditions that address suffering and illness are explored during the semester. Students in this class are required to spend part of their time in a local institution that has chaplains on staff.
