FREN 332 - Voices from Africa and its Diaspora

4 credits
Explores French-speaking Africa through the discussion of topics that include women’s condition, social and geo-political issues and the African Diaspora. Through African literature, theater, graphic novels, films, speeches, media coverage, and various art forms, students learn to recognize the discrepancies between what they (may) think of Africa, its people, its cultures, its realities, and what Africa is today (mainly Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast). Students listen to and read what Africans have to say for themselves and to the world.  The discovery of francophone African culture(s) and communities in New York City (field trip to The Africa Center and Little Senegal neighborhood in NYC) enhance experiential learning. Students improve their oral and written proficiency through a variety of short writing assignments and class presentations and discussions. Prerequisite: FREN 310  or instructor’s permission.
