SOC 304 - Sociology of Immigration4 credits A sociological and historical study of the issues surrounding immigration. The first section of the class looks at the macro side of immigration: some basic history of immigration waves to the U.S., causes and patterns of immigration, and issues such as immigrants in labor markets, economic and academic assimilation, immigrant crime, and the politics surrounding immigration both in the U.S. and abroad. The second section explores the micro side: the personal experience of immigration, immigrant identity, alienation, cultural assimilation, and acculturative stress.
