This course will consider significant memoirs of the 20th and 21st centuries. We will address the themes of journey, exile, shame, self-acceptance, and forgiveness. Among other works, we will address Mark Doty’s Dog Years, Joan Didion’s Year of the Magical Thinking, Mary Karr’s The Liar’s Club, Lison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Patti Smith’s Just Kids, and Art Spiegelman’s Maus I and II.
