About the Program

The English for Academic Purposes program prepares international students for university study. It is a requirement for most students in the INTO Pathway programs. This academically rigorous program provides international students with high-quality English language instruction and the academic skills needed to succeed at Drew. Through the development of listening, speaking, reading, writing, critical thinking, and academic study skills, classes focus on preparation for success in the American liberal arts university setting.

After completing this intensive program, successful students will be able to:

  • Interact comfortably in the US classroom with professors and fellow students;
  • Understand US values in an academic setting;
  • Present their spoken and written ideas accurately and effectively in English;
  • Write research papers with proper use of citations and references;
  • Use the internet and Drew library databases to conduct academic research;
  • Read, understand and critically evaluate academic texts;

Programs

Academic English

Students in the Academic English program study intensive English language coursework to prepare for study in a U.S. university.  International students may also enroll in the Academic English program for one or two semesters as a study abroad experience. Academic English students take courses in:  Writing and Grammar; Reading and Vocabulary; Listening and Speaking; and Special Topics.  Placement in Academic English courses is based on a proficiency assessment administered by program faculty upon arrival; students are placed in Levels 1 through 6, contingent on their scores.

Undergraduate Pathway

INTO Drew’s Pathway programs combine intensive language study, academic skills development and academic coursework in a program designed to move students successfully through the first two years of their four-year degree program.  Placement in appropriate EAP courses as part of the Pathway program is based on a proficiency assessment administered by program faculty at the beginning of the program.

  • Understand and use vocabulary common to academic disciplines.
  • Take useful and accurate notes in academic lectures and presentations.
