Pan-African Studies Major

Major effective prior to 2011.

Requirements for the Major (40 credits)

Click on the hyperlinked course subject/number to view course details including prerequisites and course attributes. Students should speak with the instructor if they do not meet any prerequisites for the course and wish to register.

 

Note: Students are required to take one course that focuses on Africa and one that focuses on the African-American experience.

I. Interdisciplinary Core (12 credits)

A. PAST (8 credits)

B. Experiential Learning and Civic Engagement (4 credits)

Note

Study-abroad on-site courses and off-campus programs may be included with appropriate content and location.

II. Electives (28 credits)

12 upper-level credits are required.

A. Social Sciences (8-20 credits)

Courses must be taken from at least two different subject areas.

B. Humanities & Arts (8-20 credits)

Courses must be taken from at least two different subject areas.

C. Additional General Electives (0-12 credits)

D. Honors Thesis (0-8 credits)

Notes

Students should consult the list published each semester by the Pan-African Studies program for additional courses. Other CLA, Caspersen, and Theological School courses may be applied to the major if they are proposed to and approved by the Pan-African Studies Committee.

Students interested in pursuing graduate studies are encouraged to write an Honors Thesis.
