Minor effective prior to 2011.

All students must take one of the following:

Requirements for the Minor (20 to 26 credits)

I. Language (8-10 credits)

ARBC 101 - Elementary Modern Standard Arabic
ARBC 102 - Elementary Modern Standard Arabic II
FREN 101 - Fundamentals of Oral and Written French I
FREN 102 - Fundamentals of Oral and Written French II
Note: Students who already speak (intermediate-level or better) French or a Middle Eastern language (Arabic, Berber, Farsi, Hebrew or Turkish) may have the language requirement waived. Instead, they should take one additional 4 credit elective.

Additional courses must be spread across at least two of the following four areas. Note also that between the core and the electives, at least three different disciplines should be included.

PSCI 256 - Selected Studies in Political Science (when topic is appropriate)
PSCI 257 - Muslims and the West
SOC 394 - Contemporary Issues in Sociology: Interdisciplinary International Topics (when topic is appropriate)

TREC programs that involve travel to the region also may count towards the Minor.

With the approval of the Director of the program in Middle Eastern and Muslim Communities, students may count towards their minor other appropriate intermediate- and upper-level courses, which may be offered from time to time.

Note

Students contemplating graduate or professional work related to the Middle East are strongly encouraged to study Arabic and to supplement their study of the language with intensive summer language programs recommended by the Director of the Middle East Studies Program.
