Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry (M.A.T.M.)


Students in the Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry program complete 45 credits from Theological School listings, as well as approved courses from the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

Degree Requirements (45 credits)


Learning Enrichment Requirements


All students fulfill learning enrichment requirements by taking courses designated with the following categories (no additional credits)

  • 1 Problem-based learing course (PBL)
  • 1 course with Technology-intensive learning (TECH)

II. Electives (10 credits)


  • 10 credits from Theological School or approved Caspersen Graduate School listings

III. Optional Concentration


Four courses from one of the following categories:

  • Africana and African American Religion (AFAM)
  • Religion and Ecology (ECO)
  • Religion and Social Justice (SJA)
  • Women’s and Gender Studies (WSTT)
  • Conflict Resolution (ARCR)

IV. Vocational Pathway (21 or 22 credits)


A. Youth and Young Adult Ministry (21 credits)


B. Music, Worship, and the Arts (21 credits)


C. Pastoral Care and Counseling (21 credits)


  • 3 credits in Interfaith Studies (INTF)
  • 12 additional credits from Pastoral Care and Counseling offerings (PCC or RPSY)
  • In consultation with one’s advisor, coursework should cover both Pastoral Care themes (such as trauma, grief, addictions, family), and Pastoral Care contexts (cultural, environmental, demographic, etc.). Courses from Medical Humanities may count with advisor approval.

    Students in this pathway may substitute Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE or CPSP) for the Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 602).

E. Social Justice Advocacy (21 credits)


  • 3 credits in Organizational Leadership (OL)
  • 12 additional credits in Social Justice Advocacy (SJA)
  • In consultation with one’s advisor, coursework should cover Ethics (ETH), social analysis or advocacy as a primary lens (such as gender, race, abilities, environment, incarceration), and music, worship, preaching, or the arts (WOR, TMUS, PREA, or ARTS).

    Students in this pathway may substitute VOCF 630  and VOCF 631  for the Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601  and VOCF 602 ).

    Note: In this pathway, one course should be a PREP course (no additional credit).
