Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry (M.A.T.M.)

Degree Requirements

Students in the Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry complete 45 credits from Theological School listings as well as approved courses from the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

I. Required Courses (12 credits):

Learning Enrichment Requirements

All students fulfill learning enrichment requirements by taking courses designated with the following categories (no additional credits)

  • 1 Problem-based learing course (PBL; any course subject)
  • 1 course with Technology-intensive learning (TECH)

II. Electives (12 credits)

  • Twelve credits from Theological School or approved Caspersen Graduate School listings

III. A Vocational Pathway (21 credits):

A. Youth and Young Adult Ministry

12 credits from Youth and Young Adult offerings (YYAM) in consultation with advisor as follows:
  • 6 credits in Worship, Music, and the Arts (WOR, PREA, TMUS, or ARTS)
  • 6 credtis in Pastoral Care or Religious Education (PCC or REDU)

Students may petition to substitute VOCF 610 - Vocational Apprenticeship for Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 602)

B. Music, Worship, and the Arts

18 credits from Worship, Music, and Arts offerings in consultation with advisor as follows:
  • 6 credits in music (TMUS)
  • 9 credits in worship or preaching (WOR, PREA)
  • 3 credits in arts (ARTS)

Students may petition to substitute VOCF 610 - Vocational Apprenticeship for Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 602)

C. Pastoral Care and Counseling

12 credits from Pastoral Care and Counseling offerings (PCC or RPSY):

In consultation with advisor, coursework should cover both pastoral care themes (such as trauma, grief, addictions, family) and pastoral care contexts (cultural, environmental, demographic, etc.). Courses from Medical Humanities may count with advisor approval.

Students in this pathway may substitute Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE or CPSP) for the Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 602).

D. United Methodist Ministries (22 credits)

E. Social Justice Advocacy

12 credits in Social Justice Advocacy offerings (SJA):

In consultation with your advisor, coursework should cover Ethics (ETH), social analysis or advocacy as a primary lens (such as gender, race, abilities, environment, incarceration), and music, worship, preaching, or the arts (WOR, TMUS, PREA, or ARTS).

Students in this pathway may substitute Justice Ministry Education Certification (JME) for the Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 602).

Note: In this pathway, one course should be a PREP course (no additional credit)

F. Christian Education

6 credits from the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies Education department chosen from:
  • EDUC 501:  The Developing Learner
  • EDUC 503:  Instructional Design
  • EDUC 504:  Diversity in Families, Schools, and Communities
  • An EDUC course with approval of advisor

Students may petition to substitute VOCF 610 - Vocational Apprenticeship for Leadership Seminar (VOCF 601 and VOCF 601).
