About the Program

The Linguistics Studies minor provides a critical framework from the study of language. Linguistics crosses a number of diciplines, and students will approach language through approaches ranging from phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics (the study of sounds, words, sentences and meaning), to historical linguistics (how languages change over time), sociolinguistics (how language is used in different places among different people), and pragmatics (how language is used in context). It can include explorations of language acquisition, and the intersection of language, philosophy, psychology, culture, and society.

Linguistics Studies may be of particular interest for students of: anthropology, English and other modern languages, music, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, sociology, and theatre. Some potential career applications for students with a background in linguistics are: primary or secondary education, foreign language education, theatre-arts and vocal coaching, teaching English as a Second Language, publishing, journalism, government work (e.g. Foreign Service), language testing agencies, speech and communication sciences, translation, and international development or business.
