About the Program
Drew’s teacher education programs develop your teaching skills by blending coursework with real-world, hands-on experiences. Candidates work closely with faculty mentors to understand the needs of diverse learners in a highly networked world.
The Master of Arts in Teaching program provides initial New Jersey certification for people ready to become teachers, while our additional endorsements and Master of Education program offer professional development opportunities for current teachers and education professionals.
Master of Education
The Master of Education program is a 30 credit advanced-degree program that focuses on theory and pedagogy in a variety of specialization areas. Each specialization allows for the development of skills and knowledge that deepen an educator’s understanding of the field. The program does not lead to certification to teach; however, currently certified teachers who meet endorsement program entry requirements may earn New Jersey state endorsements in Teacher of Students with Disabilities or English as a Second Language as part of their coursework. The flexible curriculum allows students to tailor their coursework to explore their interests and to build interdisciplinary knowledge.
Master of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching Program is a 36 credit program that prepares teachers to meet the challenges of diverse learners in 21st-century classrooms in a variety of instructional settings. Drew’s program leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with teacher certification in elementary (K-6) or secondary education (content specialty). Teacher candidates can pursue an additional endorsement in either Teacher of Students with Disabilities or English as a Second Language.
Teacher candidates in the MAT learn to apply their interdisciplinary knowledge and pedagogical competencies to effectively educate all students and meet their academic, social and developmental needs. Students merge theory and practice through the study of human development, pedagogy and educational policy. Teacher candidates engage in a wide range of classroom experiences in urban and suburban settings and complete the program with a one-year clinical internship.
Endorsement Programs
Certified teachers are eligible to apply to the endorsement programs in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (21 credits) and English as a Second Language (18 credits). Courses for these programs are offered in online formats with some options for face-to-face meetings. Candidates who complete the course requirements submit a portfolio and earn New Jersey certification in the selected area. These programs do not lead to a degree.
