CHST 626 - Acts Legacy: Mission to, with, and of the Poor

3 credits
Questions of economic and social justice, of right action towards the poor, and of the definition and role of the vulnerable in the Christian imaginary have pervaded the history of the Church from its Biblical sources through contemporary theology and practice.  This survey course explores that history through reading and discussion of selected historical sources that focus attention on poverty and on the condition of the socially fragile from ancient times through the twentieth-century. This course offers both a strong grounding in historical analysis of successive Christian perspectives on wealth and poverty, and also a critical consideration of the role of poverty in ecclesiastical mission.  To the latter end, this course is designed to fulfill the UMC Core Competencies for Mission Education requirement.
