CHST 653 - The Way of the Christian Mystics

3 credits
Examines selected writings of Christian mystics from modern and pre-modern sources, including works by the desert fathers and mothers, Celtic Christian monastics, Mesiter Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, Teresa of Avila, the early Quakers, Henry David Thoreau, Rufus Jones, Thomas Merton, Howard Thurman, and others. What is mysticism? Who counts as a mystic, and why? And who gets to decide? What is the relationship between mystical contemplation and social action? Between mysticism and religious orthodoxies? How do people read mystics in relation to their particular contexts? And finally, what spiritual and intellectual insights for our own time can one glean from reading the mystics?
