ARFA 812 - The Watercolourist’s Craft: Pushing the Boundries

3 credits
Provides a hands-on approach to painting, using watercolor as a medium. Students look to six established artists as guides and inspiration: John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Charles Burchfield, John Marin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Paul Klee. These particular painters have worked in multiple mediums throughout their careers; yet, through the unique medium of watercolor they explored new, bold, inventive treatments and techniques. Students let these six artists lead them to discover contemporary watercolorists, and consider distinctive elements in their approach to watercolor that may inspire their own creations.  Students create their own watercolor paintings, resulting in a final portfolio, as well as engage in research presentations and writing assignments arising from course themes.   No previous painting experience is required, and all levels of experience are welcome.
