ARGS 839 - A History of Empires and Imperialism3 credits In global history, the empire has been the dominant political, social and economic entity for almost all people in every part of the world. Only in the last few decades has it become unfashionable for a state to be labeled an empire, although whether this means that empires no longer exist is a different question entirely. Students examine what an empire is and what characteristics reveal whether a state is an empire or not. Students explore the nature of imperialism in a global context, understanding how these ideologies have shaped our world today. Readings may aim to reflect recent and emerging directions in the study of both Western and non-Western empires across time in a way that will foster awareness of the global dimensions of the topic.
