ARFA 836 - Music in the Modern Era

3 credits
In the past 125 years, music has gone through many phases in both the concert and popular areas. Through the concert world, students examine experimental composers whose music remains at the forefront of modern compositional trends. Through the popular music world, students observe the development of 20th century jazz in many styles – Dixieland, hot jazz, swing, bebop, and cool. Students also explore how the Broadway Musical grew from roots in operetta and vaudeville, shifting into one of the world’s dominant musical theater formats. Additionally, the growth of broadcasting led to the success of rock and roll, doo wop, rap, folk revival, and more. Students explore the many varieties of both concert and popular music that continue to define music and entertainment in the 21st century.
