ARFA 856 - Birth of a Black Nation: A Century of African Americans in Film3 credits Allows students to look at the racial connections and differences that develop through the 20th and 21st century, the role blackface plays in film, and representations of black masculinity and femininity. Exposing students to the long history of African Americans in film, students will have the opportunity to explore over a century of representations of black people through multiple genres and by a diverse set of directors and actors. Students will also have an opportunity to trace visual representations from the early 20th-century to the present.
