ARHI 812 - “A Splendid Little War”: The Spanish American War and The Dawn of the American Century3 credits
“A Splendid Little War” is Teddy Roosevelt’s famous description of the Spanish-American War. A war that lasted only a little longer than the Gulf War with casualties that would barely merit the designation “war” today—except for the lasting consequences of this “splendid little war.” Cuba achieved its independence, the United States acquired its first real colonies, America was launched onto the international state, Roosevelt was catapulted into national prominence, and the American tradition of protecting the oppressed and/or intervening for our own selfish reasons was started. This tradition continues today with our recent involvement in Somalia, Iraq, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Students examine the powerful forces that led up to the war, its lasting effect, key historical treatments, and depictions in film and literature.
