ARHI 810 - The American Civil War in History and Memory

3 credits
“The Civil War is our felt history—history lived in the national imagination,” wrote Robert Penn Warren in 1961. Indeed the Civil War occupies a prominent place in our national memory and has served to both unite and divide Americans. One purpose of this course will be to study what actually caused the Civil War and many of the major (and some of the minor) battles of the war, as well as key cultural, literary and political themes that emerge from the war. Students will have the opportunity to explore the battles themselves; their impact on the war, the strategy and politics of both sides; and the key figures in the conflict.
