ARHI 809 - Abraham Lincoln: Many and Myth in American Memory3 credits Over 150 years after his death Abraham Lincoln is still one of the most praised, studied, glorified and quoted citizens in our history. He has had more books written about him than any other American, been consistently selected as the best president in US history, and has had many radio, movie, and television productions centered on him. Yet, Lincoln still remains a mystery. Many argue that it was Lincoln who changed the course of American history with the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address. Students take a deeper look at our 16th president, trying to better understand him in his own time and his significance for Americans ever since. Readings include Lincoln’s own writings and the best of recent scholarship.
