ARHI 807 - George Washington: The Indispensable Man3 credits Thomas Flexnor titled his biography of Washington, The Indispensable Man, and Robert Leckie called his volume on the Revolutionary War, George Washington’s War. Though scholars and laymen may cringe equally to hear Washington called the Father of His Country, these books and many more—as well as countless places, schools, and streets named for Washington—are compelling testimony to the fact that most Americans do indeed see Washington as the father of the nation. Students explore Washington’s life and legacies, with special attention to the Revolutionary War, the Constitutional Convention and his presidency. The guiding principle will be to attempt to go beyond the marble statues and the Stuart paintings in order to learn about the man, his times, and what he means for Americans in the 21st century.
