ARGS 841 - Science, Spade and Scripture: History, Archaeology, and Religion in the Bible Lands3 credits There has long been a close connection between the scientific and academic study of the Ancient Near East and the tradition of Biblical Studies. Students examine the “triangular” relationship between the scientific evidence for social, political and religious life, the extra-Biblical texts from the Biblical Lands of Canaan and Israel, and the Bible text itself. Questions have arised about many of the basic assumptions of the original paradigm of “Biblical Archaeology”. Although problems of a historical nature have been previously emphasized, the field has since seen an increasing interest in anthropological issues. Today, matters involving science, anthropology, history, and religion loom outside of the academies and seminaries in the world of everyday lives, presenting scholars with the critical challenge of explaining the complex relationship between fact and faith.
