ARGS 840 - The Evolution of the Empire3 credits Examines the development of empires and expansionist systems through history. Begins with a review of theoretical work on the question of expansionism to develop models to be used in specific case studies. Conducts a survey of expansive interaction systems, following key cultural systems around the world. Beginning with the early empires of Ancient Greece and Rome, students turn to the rise and spread of religions, the Mughals, the Ottoman Empire, and the Age of Colonialism. Explores the set of new meanings that the term empire has taken on with a special focus on expansionist systems of the U.S. in the 20th/21st centuries. This survey takes a comparative approach, examining similarities and differences between expansionist systems. Attention is paid to the perspectives of those being conquered and colonized.
