AREL 808 - The Literature of Late Medieval Britain3 credits What happens at the end of the Middle Ages in Western Europe can be paralleled to what happens to Western culture during the 20th c. In either case, a well-established vision of society falls apart, and a new one begins to form. Students may look at the three major authors of the 14th c in England: Langland, Chaucer, and the Gawain poet. While doing so, students consider how vernacular literacy is impacting notions of literature, and will see the birth of English author-ship with Chaucer. Texts may include Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde and selections from The Canterbury Tales, Langland’s Piers Plowman, and the Gawain poet’s Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Concludes by looking at the shift in the 15th c from the Cycle or Corpus Christie drama to the morality play.
