AREL 853 - Not Simply Betty or Veronica: Women’s Graphic Storytelling

3 credits
Despite the fact that graphic storytelling has been formalized into scholarly discourse, university libraries, and other educational settings, the study of women writers and artists and the graphic narratives they create still lags behind. The role of women in the historical compendium of American comics serves as an introduction to an engagement of a distinctive collection of memoirs, self-conscious representations, the fanciful, and other renderings of diverse–gender, ethnic, racial, aging and regional–life experiences. Contextual essays, interviews, and other readings and media may accompany the assigned narratives. Students have the opportunity to represent a topic or theme through a graphic storytelling project.
