ENGH 106 - African American Literature

4 credits
A study of the writers in the African American literary tradition from the beginning of the nineteenth/twentieth century to the present. Examines the work of selected writers in light of their historical time and place, major themes, conclusions about the nature of black experience, and their contributions to this literary tradition and to the American literary canon. Attention is paid to particular movements in this tradition, such as the Harlem Renaissance, protest literature, the Black Arts movement, and contemporary directions in the literature since the 1970s.
