HIST 375 - The Human Self: A Political History4 credits Certain political gestures have challenged forms of oppression and have dominated debates over international relations. But a politics based on the human self has often been accused of harboring limitations to universality. The question of the human species’ dignity is centered around studies into the cognitive capabilities of other animals, and developments in artificial intelligence. Students examine the human self as a master concept of politics. Students also track the feminist and anti-colonial criticism of this concept up until animal rights activism, and consider how scientific developments have blurred the line between humans and other creatures that humanist politics requires. In addition to political and philosophical texts, students may watch several films which raise the perennial question: What does it mean to be human?
