FILM 323 - Cinema and Social Justice

4 credits
What is the role of cinema in social justice struggles? How does political climate affect cinematic culture and vice versa? What is the significance of independent media, and how do we understand the relationship between media and democracy? Some of these questions may be addressed through closely analyzing and contextualizing films by Errol Morris, Michael Moore, Vittorio de Sica, Ken Loach, and others. Drawing on film and media theory, students will have the opportunity to examine films’ political claims and assess their social implications. One of the eventual goals may be to imagine what a revolutionary cinema might look like in the era of the Internet. Same as ENGH 323 . Prerequisite: ENGH 150  or ENGH 120   or FILM 101 .
