ENGH 250 - The Medieval Period: Mapping the Anglo-American Literary Tradition4 credits Explores the dynamic relations among author, reader, theme, form, culture and intertextuality through an examination of representative Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Norman-French and English texts. Traces the development of English manuscript literature from its oral story-telling beginnings up to the advent of printing. Special attention may be given to the rise of literacy and its impact on narrative and poetry. Authors/texts may include: Beowulf, Arthurian romance, Marie de France, The Tain, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, medieval drama, and of course, Chaucer. CLA-Breadth/Humanities
