CLAS 275 - Law and Trials in Ancient Society

2-4 credits
Students study historic documents and accounts of trials from ancient Egypt, Babylon, Greece, and Rome, and act out several trials in class. Introduces principles of law, legal thinking, and the relation of law to society, that are relevant today. Takes a liberal arts approach to the subject; students consider landmark cases with a focus on critical thinking. Also provides a background survey of key features of civilization and their development over time. Topics may include: justice in ancient Egypt, Hammurabi’s code, speeches in the courts of Athens and Rome (showing the power of words and persuasion), the trial of Socrates, the trial of Jesus, the role of Roman emperors, the Code of Justinian, and more.
