WGST 314 - Engendering Prisons4 credits Engages students in a critical analysis of the causes and consequences of the recent growth in the prison-industrial complex in the United States. Uses readings, assignments and lectures to explore the role of social systems of stratification (particularly race, class, and gender) in shaping the U.S. prison industry, along with the following themes: the rise of mass incarceration in the U.S.; gendered pathways to prison; gendered experiences of incarceration; gendered risks of entry. Utilizes the Inside-Out model which is dialogue-based and highly interactive. Most class sessions will be held at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women, the only women’s prison in NJ, a valuable resource to explore these issues. Same as SOC 314 . Prioritized registraton for sociology majors. Prerequisite: SOC 101 . Signature of instructor required for registration.
