HIST 213 - Conspiracy Theory in American History4 credits Explores the many conspiracy theories that have permeated American culture from the revolutionary era to the present day. Specific theories to be covered may include: the Illuminati scare of the 1790s, the Anti-Masonic theories of the mid-1800s, the presidential assassination theories centering on Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, alien abduction theories, HIV/AIDS infection theories, and post-World War II theories concerned with an all-encompassing New World Order. Students will have the opportunity to consider these theories in the context of the social, intellectual, political, and cultural forces that accompany them. Students may also learn to analyze critically the validity of different theories by evaluating the evidence and logic used by theorists to build their cases. CLA-Breadth/Humanities
