BIOL 103 - Microbes in Health and Disease

4 credits
An introduction to the microbial world with emphasis on the importance of microbes in human survival and well-being. Topics in this nonmajors course may include the role of microbes in biotechnology, industry, agriculture, and the environment as well as in infectious diseases.  Assessing and controlling microbial growth is addressed and is an essential component of Public Health. Lectures are complemented with case studies, student presentations, hands-on activities during class time, and a site visit to a nearby sewage treatment plant. One of the core courses for the Public Health Minor.  Does not meet requirements for major or minor in Biology. CLA-Breadth/Natural Science, CLA-Quantitative
