PAST 308 - Global Hip-Hop, Youth Activism, and Global Change

4 credits
Hip-Hop plays a central role in the development of Black Aesthetics, Cultural Politics, and Political Thought of youth of color in North America, the African Diaspora, and globally. With particular focus on youth as producers and consumers of hip-hop culture, as well as hip-hop’s role as a conscientization tool for activism in the United States and globally, this course will explore teh dynamics of Hip-Hop culture, its historical development, racial and sexual politics, political mobilization, mainstream recognition, and social influence in the US and abroad. This course will also reflect on the pedagogical significance of hip-hop for youth activism and its increasing global expansion. May be taken as an independent study.
