EDUC 610 - Understanding Special Populations

3 credits
This course is designed to address current issues, instructional strategies, and trends affecting exceptional children and youth and the delivery of special education services. Essential educational foundations of special education including philosophical, historical, and legal precedents will be covered. Course content introduces teacher candidates to Council for Exceptional Children standards and each of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act disability categories and discusses the needs of children who are gifted and talented. Teacher candidates will attend sessions on campus as well as visit schools and/or agencies serving students with high- and low-incidence disabilities to develop a solid understanding of learning characteristics and the most current teaching techniques for each disability category. The course will also address ecological factors that influence children with exceptional learning needs in and out of the classroom and focus on family partnerships. Class sessions will provide opportunities for classroom observations and dialog with program staff as well as instruction by and discussions with University faculty. Guest lecturers will provide opportunities to deepen understandings of persons with disabilities from various perspectives. A course embedded field component will be required.
