ARFA 812 - The Watercolourist’s Craft: Pushing the Boundries

3 credits
This course provides a hands-on approach to painting, using watercolor as a medium.  In this class, we will look to six established artists as our guides and inspiration: John Singer Sargent. Winslow Homer, Charles Burchfield, John Marin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Paul Klee.  These particular painters have worked in multiple mediums throughout their careers; yet, through the unique medium of watercolor they explored new, bold, inventive treatments and techniques.  They individualistically transformed how other artists have regarded the medium over time, prompting subsequent experimentation.  Throughout the semester, we will let these six artists lead us to discover contemporary watercolorists, and consider distinctive elements in their approach to watercolor that, in turn, may inspire our own creations.  Students in this class will create their own watercolor paintings, resulting in a final portfolio, as well as engage in research presentations and writing assignments arising from course themes.   No previous painting experience is required, and all levels of experience are welcome.
