HIST 265 - lntroduction to South Asia in Modern History

4 credits
This course introduces students to the nations of the world region of South Asia, which includes India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives Islands. Th e course centrally engages the methodo logies of history and regional historical comparison. Through th e study of the modern history of these nations, including analysis of religious identity and citizenship, political order, cultural character and historical memory, stud ents are acquainted with the profile of each nation-state’s dominant modes and significant contestations to them. Analysis of case studies of both conflict and cooperation provide an und erstanding of South Asian regional dynamics and their international significa nce in modern history.
