ANTH 102 - Science and the Human Past: Introduction to Archaeology4 credits An introduction to the aims, methods, and practice of archaeology as a sub-discipline of anthropology through case studies from famous sites and discoveries from around the world. Students gain an understanding of how archaeologists use material remains to reconstruct past societies and cultural transformations such as the origins of agriculture and the rise of civilizations using methods developed and borrowed from the physical and natural sciences. The course includes consideration of experimental archaeology and the role of the past in contemporary society. Offered every semester.
