ENGH 257 - Shakespeare4 credits A study of representative texts from Shakespeare’s three major genres: the comedies, tragedies, and history plays. In addition to close reading of individual plays, the course will try to situate Shakespeare within the cultural, political, and social contexts of Elizabethan and Jacobean London and will consider ways in which the playwright, wildly popular in his day, was intent on speaking both to power and the people. Equivalent: ENGL 276 CLA-Breadth/Humanities
