REL 260 - History and Culture of South Asia: Tradition & Today4 credits A survey course on foundational cultural ideas and practices that define and are characteristic of South Asia, foregrounding India, as they are instituted and developed through time in religion and related literature, arts and social practices. The course centrally deploys the methodologies of history and regional historical comparison. Thematic topics include social definitions of community, traditional depictions of status according to class and gender, and the creation of paths of ethical behavior that promote social cohesion. The course explores these themes through historical interactions among traditions as well as challenges to and the use of tradition in the present day.
