PHYS 332 - Thermal Physics4 credits A study of the fundamental concepts of classical thermodynamics and the thermal behavior of gases, liquids, and solids. The kinetic theory of gases. Statistical thermodynamics, including Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, and Fermi-Dirac statistics. Applications to an ideal diatomic gas, electrons in metals and monatomic crystals. Connection between statistical thermodynamics and information theory. Meets: Four hours lecture. Prerequisite: PHYS 150 , PHYS 160 , and MATH 250 . Offered fall semester in even-numbered years.
