ENGL 220 - History and Structure of the English Language4 credits A study of the development of English from Anglo-Saxon to its present status as a “global” language. The development of English is placed within the framing social, political and economic contexts of its speakers. May also examine the historical development of theories attempting to explain English, its styles, dialects, and literatures. Same as: LING 220 . Enrollment priority: given to English majors and minors. Offered in alternate spring semesters.
