HIST 317 - Adverstising in American History4 credits We are what we buy. Or is it, we buy what we are? Advertisers have seconds to convince us to consume their products or ideas, therefore they must rely on well-known tropes, i.e. the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. Understanding advertising helps us understand these stories, how things have changes, and how things remain the same. In Advertising in American History, we will study the emergence of modern advertising and commodity culture and its evolution to the modern day. We will study the ads themselves, the stories ads tell, and what those stories tell us about American culture and society. The class will include lecture, discussion, in-class ad analysis and student presentations. CLA-Diversity/US
