EDUC 620 - Introduction to Linguistics and the English Language3 credits This course introduces the foundational concepts of linguistics and the four formal areas of the study of modern English: phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics. We will give special attention to the intersections of formal linguistics with the teaching of the English language, and the cultural and rhetorical dimensions that shape language use. Undergraduate students will have the option of a project oriented around language in the world; graduate students will focus more on formal linguistics.
