MATS 814 - Building Collaboration with Families, School and Community

3 credits
This course addresses the importance of family and professional partnerships, as well as the school and community supports needed to meet the positive growth and development of students with special needs.  Collaboration, consultation, communication, teamwork, and system coordination are key elements of focus.  Emphasis is placed on building strong and trusting relationships between school personnel, families, and community agencies.  The course extends from preschool through transitions leading to postsecondary adjustment and quality of life. IEP goals and models for transition planning are explored. Life span issues affecting all individuals are reviewed. Proven practices to engage students with special needs in self-advocacy, notably for student-centered transition planning, are presented.  In addition, contemporary issues pertaining to diverse family dynamics, cultural attitudes, poverty, and language barriers are examined.
