ENGL 399 - Havana: A Tale of two Cities4 credits Cuba exists in our imaginations, but few Americans can actually visit and see for themselves what it is like. This short-term program will change that, allowing Drew students to visit Havana, Cuba and “Little Havana” in Miami, learn about and compare the two Havana’s, and write about the experience in formal travel essays and informal travel notebooks. By having the opportunity to explore the differences between the two Havana’s first-hand as well as through readings and films before we leave, students will be able to understand both places more fully, along with related issues of place, displacement, imagination, memory, and the myths that develop and are manufactured around those things.
Beyond just the opportunity to visit and learn about both places, this program will be a travel writing class. Students will learn about the genre of travel writing and read travel writers (to Cuba and elsewhere)– including Hemmingway of course. They will also learn how to keep a reflective writer’s notebook and revise their work (in writer’s workshops) to take into consideration content, audience, purpose, and style. Enrollment priority will be given to English Majors and Minors; and Sophomores. Offered January Term. Breadth/International, Breadth/Interdisciplinary, Writing Intensive, Off-Campus
