BBST 721 - The Genesis of Identity (Genesis 12-50)3 credits As the name ‘genesis’ implies, the book of Genesis is a story of origins. Complex, episodic, ethnically focused and biased, chapters 12-50 are the epitome of what one theorist has described as a constitutive narrative, recounting for the sake of community survival stories of group origins and destiny. This course is an advanced exegetical exploration of Genesis 12-50 with the theme of identity as the primary critical lens. This includes attention to how these chapters might have shaped the identity of the ancient community of post-exilic Yehud and to how these chapters shape identity among contemporary readers. Signature of instructor required for registration.
