BBST 717 - The Gospel of John3 credits Johannine christology, and Johannine theology in general, are the major foci of this course. John’s theological ascendency is rooted in the fourth century and the birth of imperial Christianity. In consequence, John’s convoluted relationship to empire is also a major focus of this course, and postcolonial criticism is one of the principal methods it utilizes. Feminist criticism also looms large, as the gospel’s (anti-)imperial dynamics are traversed by gender dynamics. Other critical resources used to explore the gospel’s contemporary significance include deconstructive criticism, masculinity studies, queer criticism, and ecocriticism.
