CSOC 619 - The Search for the Good Community

3 credits
The vision of the good community has been a significant part of Christianity since early church formation. In conversation with classical texts on the common good from Plato and Aristotle, foundational Christian thinkers like Augustine and Aquinas set the stage for modernist conceptions of the common good as an ideal for political institutions. Postcolonial and anti-racist contemporary responses have moved beyond notions of nation state and pushed for cooperative movements, intentional communities, and even virtual social action inclusive of environmental and gender concerns. This course explores how contemporary discussions are related to the classical historical texts and whether the common good is still a helpful way to think about political practices and institutions in the context of contemporary politics?
